Cupping therapy is one that is found throughout the world in many different healing traditions. Chinese Medicine has been using this therapy for thousands of years and it is highly effective for numerous conditions. I often use cupping for pain and tension, upper respiratory issues including coughs and colds, to improve circulation and to boost the immune system. It is on of my favorite tools in Chinese Medicine and it quite literally has saved my life. Ask me about it at our first visit!
Cupping works by applying suction to a desired area and leaving them stationary or moving them around. You can think of it like a reverse massage. Instead of applying pressure, suction is applied. Applying suction to an area allows blood flow to increase, improves circulation and promotes lymphatic function. It has been shown to have positive effects on the immune system and in controlling inflammatory responses. It is common to have red, blue, or purple markings after the cups are removed. They are different than bruises and you will likely not notice them. The can remain for a couple days and up to a couple weeks. As circulation and blood flow improve in the area, the time it takes for the markings to resolve will decrease.
At Sound Health, we use a style of cupping called fire cupping. Fire cupping uses the heat of a flame to create suction in a round, glass cup before it is placed on the skin. There is never any flame directly over the body and there is no flame in the glass cup when it is applied to the skin. Flame is inserted into the cup and taken out quickly before applying the cup to the skin. The heat creates a vacuum, allowing the cups to stay in place on the body for a therapeutic amount of time.
